Global Vibes

German Unity Day (Tag der deutschen Einheit) commemorates the reunification of Germany in 1990, when West Germany (the Federal Republic of Germany) and East Germany (the German Democratic Republic) were unified - resulting in a single German state for the first time since 1945.

Every year, a different major city hosts a ceremonial act and a citizen’s festival - this year, it will take place in Erfurt, state capital of Thuringia.

Fun fact: in 1999, a federation named “Zipfelbund” was formalised, consisting of four communities at the cardinal compass points of Germany (North, West, South, East) - representing the modern borders of Germany.
